The Tanzania Police Force has issued a certificate to clear Harbinder Singh Sethi, Chairman of Independent Power Tanzania Limited (IPTL), of any criminal antecedents in their records.

The Police Clearance Certificate with reference number FB/FP/G.4/2026/VOL.III/49198, was issued by the Forensic Bureau of the Tanzania Police Force in Dar es Salaam.
The certificate came after IPTL chairman Harbinder Singh Sethi was released by the court after spending over four years behind bars on an economic sabotage case, and this clearance is seen as a vindication of his stance, proving he has clean hands. The IPTL chairman was arrested during the Magufuli regime amid allegations of economic crimes tied to IPTL's operations.

The Forensic Bureau processed Harbinder's fingerprint search to verify if he had any registered convictions in Tanzania. Officials at the bureau took Harbinder's fingerprints to conduct a thorough investigation for criminal records.
The search involved checking the collection of fingerprints of persons with convictions registered in Tanzania's forensic database.

The fingerprint analysis was carried out by J.E Mabeyo, a Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police. J.E Mabeyo, appointed under Section 141(2) of the CPA, oversees the fingerprints department with expertise.

The result of the fingerprint search for Harbinder Singh Sethi was negative, indicating no criminal convictions.

The Police Clearance Certificate confirms Harbinder has no recorded convictions in Tanzania as of 18/03/2026.

The document is valid until 18/09/2026 and is essential for Visas and Banking applications abroad.

Harbinder, the IPTL Chairman, couldn't be happier with the certificate, saying it's a big relief for his business dealings.

"I'm thrilled to receive this clearance certificate," Harbinder said. "It reaffirms my commitment to contributing to Tanzania's development, especially in the power sector."

As Chairman of Independent Power Tanzania Limited (IPTL), Harbinder pledged to continue supporting the six-phase government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan in enhancing the country's power industry.

"We'll keep working closely with the government to boost energy production and distribution in Tanzania," Harbinder stated.

Adding to the good news, IPTL has recently won a significant case in the Court of Appeal against Standard Chartered Bank, further solidifying its position in the energy sector.

The court's ruling orders Standard Chartered Bank to pay IPTL $168 million plus interest, a major victory for the company and a testament to its strong legal standing and commitment to transparency.

Economists are hailing the Police Clearance Certificate as a boost to Tanzania's business environment.

"It enhances investor confidence," says Dr. Happiness Mgema, an economist. "Clearance certificates like this signal stability and transparency."

"The win in the Court of Appeal case coupled with the clearance certificate strengthens IPTL's position to pursue more investments," adds Erick Mwakalinga, an energy sector analyst. "This could spur growth in Tanzania's power sector."
